Norfolk Family Coalition Collaborative

Organization Profile

The Norfolk Family Coalition was developed to build collaboration among agencies, networks, and the broader community to find innovative solutions to improve the quality of life to the people and communities in and around Norfolk. Our collaborative is made up of community members and agencies joining together to look at how we can collaborate to make lasting change in our community. We work to address the needs of families and children in the Norfolk area that state data have identified as below state levels; to support service providers in coming together to build supports to families, children, and youth by assuring that protective factors for healthy families are in place in the Norfolk area; to build a collaborative of providers to assure that Norfolk area children are healthy, safe, ready for school, succeeding in school, supported by quality environments, and families are self sufficient. We welcome community members, agencies, and organizations to our bi-monthly meetings to discuss the needs they see and work towards a plan to address and meet the growing needs for our area. The Norfolk Family Coalition offers several initiatives for Norfolk and surrounding communities, these include Stuff the Bus, and Connected Youth.

Project Description

Make your dollar go even further! Every dollar donated to the Connected Youth Intiative will be matched!!

The Connected Youth Initiative targets youth ages 14-24 who are considered “unconnected” – either because they’ve aged out of the foster care system, are exiting the juvenile justice system, are homeless or near homeless, or simply lack the family supports required to transition successfully to adulthood. The goal of the Connected Youth Initiative is simple: To support unconnected young people to become self-reliant, contributing adults. For youth that lack the support of a family, the barriers to independence can seem insurmountable. Funds will used to remove those barriers, and make success attainable for this vulnerable population. We have some key partners around the table with the experience and concerns that they see facing today's unconnected youth, we are looking to form a youth council to better hear and understand their needs, concerns, and experiences. We are developing a service array that would touch on access to basic needs, medical, dental, and behavioral health, emergency and sustainable housing, education and employment, coaching and advocacy as well as building supports and relationships.

Stuff the Bus has been an ongoing effort since the early 90s in partnership between Norfolk Council for Family Empowerment (now merged with the Norfolk Family Coalition) and the Salvation Army.  Each year the need increases as there are more families applying for the assistance of a new book bag filled with age appropriate school supplies. It costs an average of $60 per book bag filled with new school supplies. Stuff the Bus plans to serve at least 250 children for the 2017-2018 school year. 50% of the children in the Norfolk School District qualify for free and reduced meals. Your donation will help these students start their school year off right with basic supplies needed to succeed in their education and future success. Stuff the Bus looks to merge the gap between fitting in and feeling different for children.
